Psychodynamic Therapy with Transgender & Gender Diverse Patients

This workshop will provide basic theoretical knowledge for psychodynamic work with transgender and gender diverse patients. After introducing participants to language and definitions related to the gender diverse community, this workshop will consist of learning about transference dynamics that may occur when working with transgender patients, common defenses used to deal with transphobia and the therapist’s cisgender privilege, and resentment towards letter writing for hormones and/or surgery. The psychological and ethical challenges of working with this population will be discussed. We will explore how identity development can be difficult for patients living in a cissexist and transphobic work and how psychodynamic therapy can assist patients with the development of a cohesive self. The emphasis will be on object relations theory and self-psychology.

Transference Dynamics during the Therapist’s Transition

Transference dynamics are shifted whenever self-disclosure occurs. Some things are automatically disclosed (or assumed) by the patient: race, gender, or age for example. LGB (lesbian, gay, and bisexual) clinicians can choose to disclose their sexual identities, whereas pre-medical transition therapists are forced to bring their personal lives into the therapeutic space as their bodies change through hormones and/or surgery. Drawing parallels from literature on transference dynamics during a therapist’s pregnancy, this talk will explore transference shifts that can occur based on different personality structures of the patient. Vignettes based on cases of transgender patients with who were in treatment with a transgender man who had chest reconstruction during the course of their treatment will be presented. ________________________________________________________
